About my Dzindi Indian Series – Commentary by the author, Grandmaster Ron W Henley

Crushing White: The DZINDZI INDIAN! is designed to give you an easy-to-learn yet powerful and incredibly effective weapon that you can employ with Black as early as move five (!) against “Queen’s Pawn” players.

At the 1998 US Amateur Team Championships in Somerset New Jersey next to me on Board One was the Twelfth World Champion Anatoly Karpov. Imagine mine and Anatoly’s surprise when a USCF Rated 1900 player whipped out the DZINDZI INDIAN against Karpov! It was an absolutely great choice as it was one of the few openings Anatoly did not have worked out or much experience in. Being a true Champion, Karpov went into a deep think and then proceeded to win a very tough double edged game.
A few days later over breakfast, Grandmaster Roman Dzindzichashvili and I were discussing the game. Roman demonstrated how Black could have held the position and even achieved excellent counterplay.

I find the DZINDI INDIAN! is an amazing opening for a number of reasons. It is one of the very few openings in chess where tournament results actually favor Black! This is not a skewed perception based on my own experiences and preferences, but is grounded in statistical fact. In the CHESSBASE 2010 MEGA DATABASE of 4.5 million games, there are 919 tournament games featuring the DZINDZI INDIAN. The CHESSBASE STATISTICS show that BLACK SCORED an amazing 57% !

Roman Dzindzichashvilli – A close personal friend and inventor of the Dzindzi Indian System

While the above mentioned Chessbase statistics are already hugely in Black’s favor, they are based on games primarily of talented young players from candidate master level and higher. If you take an opening that performs so heroicly at those levels and employ it at the club level – as you can well imagine – the results can be simply devastating!

Part of the effectiveness of the DZINDZI INDIAN in practical play, is that Queen Pawn players face it far less often than the more popular defenses. Therefore they are faced with the “double whammy” of a powerful psychological impact combined with being thrown on their own at a very early stage in a dynamically unbalanced situation. As we will see from the Illustrative Games, White players often lose their footing and simply don’t appreciate the danger in allowing Black to achieve his goals.

The real strength of the DZINDZI INDIAN is that I believe it is strategically sound and based on a solid positional plan. On move four, Black surrenders his dark squared bishop to inflict structural damage on the white pawn formation. This bold decision immediately creates a dynamically balanced situation where each side needs to structure their play according to the demands of the new situation. Endgames often favor Black, but planless play by White can also lead to catastrophe for the first player, as we will see from the Illustrative Games.

In reviewing databases and hundreds of games for selection in Crushing White: The DZINDZI INDIAN! and companion three volume Chess On DVD, I was quite surprised at the large number of games played by Junior players, but especially young ladies in women’s tournaments. Upon further reflection it makes a great deal of sense. The more serious of these players (especially from the former east European Bloc countries and now from India), have trainers or coaches who have taught them the nuances and subtle secrets of the DZINDZI INDIAN. These young Ladies play beautiful chess and have scored some crushing wins in international events. A few Seniors have also employed the DZINDZI INDIAN with good results. The opening is in fact a great choice as Black has a number of clear strategic themes and tactical motifs that once properly explained are easy to grasp.

Once you learn these concepts it will be amazing have often they occur over and over again! Mastering the tactical motifs and strategic plans will allow you to win many games where the White player will still be confused about what happened!

NOTE: Volumes 6 and 7 do not have corresponding pages because the content was not yet covered in writing in either the original book or our eBook version. That is why there are 10 videos and 8 eBooks.

Dzindzi Indian! I do like this crazy opening since I saw it first time on a vid of Roman. I played it from time to time with good success against much higher rated opponents. Most players are simply out of preparation when you play it. Last time I met one of my former trainers on a tournament with 15 minutes time control – I completely outplayed him – up today he says the whole opening is a big blunder – against every opening principle :-)
Getting now Rons DVDs I was completely surprised how much detailed material, deep analysis and ideas to improve the positions is given – I can only recommend: buy and play!
