The Dzindzi Indian – The Passive Approach 6.E3
White players often play such pawn moves thinking only in terms of rapid development of their kingside pieces and with a view towards bringing the light squared Bishop to d3.However, on e3 the white pawn takes away one square from the white DARK SQUARE bishop on c1 and even worse blocks the Bishops access to the squares f4, e5 and h6! In fact, after 6.e3 White only has three squares for his Bishop–d2, b2 and a3, none of which are particularly impressive.Since 6 e3 is not a very promising way for White to meet the demands of his position, it therefore comes as no great surprise that in a survey of the CHESSBASE 2010 MEGA
DATABASE of 4.5 million games that White achieved very poor results. Even so, a score of only 29% for White after 6.e3 is still pretty amazing!
How Should Black Proceed?
As the White set up is initially non- threatening, Black should go about this normal plan of development, with an eye towards applying pressure to the fixed white pawns on c3 and c4.
Therefore:
a) Qd8-a5
Attacks the White pawn on c3
b) d7-d6
Blocks the white pawn on d5 and gives the black queenside minor pieces access to the d7 square.
c) Ng8-f6
Combines with the black pawn on f5 to fight for control of the important e4 central square light square. This ¤ development also gives Black the kingside castling option.
d) Nb8-d7
From d7 the black Knight can continue on to either e5 or b6 and in both cases begin pressuring the fixed white target on c4.
e) Bc8-d7
From d7 the black Bishop covers the LIGHT SQUARES b5 and a4, while giving Black the flexibility to castle queenside on a moments notice.
